To commemorate World Environment Day 2025, which carries the global theme “End Plastic Pollution,” Yayasan Swadaya Dian Khatulistiwa (YSDK), in collaboration with the Bengkayang District Office of Housing, Settlement Areas, and Environment (PerkimLH), organized an environmental stewardship activity on June 10, 2025, at the former illegal mining (ex-PETI) Grasstrack area in Monterado Village.
The activity was attended by approximately 150 participants representing various stakeholder groups, including the Regent of Bengkayang, Sebastianus Darwis, S.E., M.M., members of the Forkopimda, relevant government agencies (OPDs), the Monterado community, the Mawar Mekar Women Farmers Group, youth representatives, students, academics from the Faculty of Agriculture at Tanjungpura University, the YSDK team, and other invited guests.

The program began with a group morning exercise session, followed by a morning assembly led directly by the Regent of Bengkayang. A key highlight of the event was the official inauguration of the Monterado Village ProKlim Team and the presentation of the 2024 National ProKlim Primary Award Trophy to the Head of Goa Boma Village. The ceremony concluded with a group photo session involving all participants.
The spirit of environmental stewardship continued with a symbolic tree-planting ceremony led by the Regent of Bengkayang, accompanied by representatives from YSDK, the Head of Monterado Village, and other attending stakeholders.
In addition to the field activities, the program also included an environmental seminar featuring:
Mr. Muhammad Nuriman, S.P., M.Si. (Lecturer, Faculty of Agriculture, Tanjungpura University), who delivered a presentation entitled “Evaluation of Bio-Reclamation of Former Gold Mining Areas.”
Mr. Ir. Sigit Sapto Wibowo, M.Sc. (YSDK), who shared good practices from the implementation of the Climate Village Program (ProKlim) in Goa Boma Village, including the transformation of former mining areas into environmentally friendly demonstration plots through the application of technologies such as biofloc, biogas, and livestock waste processing into organic fertilizer.

This activity serves as a tangible example of cross-sector collaboration—uniting government, communities, academia, and civil society organizations—to advance an ecological transformation that is just and sustainable.
The spirit emerging from Monterado Village is expected to continue inspiring other regions in efforts to create a healthier, more sustainable environment free from plastic pollution.
Salam Lestari! 🌿
