Background & Objectives

Background

The existence of non-governmental organizations or NGOs since decades ago is a form of elaborating a commitment to support marginalized communities.

Assistance to the community is carried out through various roles such as being a pioneer in developing mentoring models, as a facilitator and catalyst for collaboration with various parties, as an advocacy agent for policies to be more pro-community.

The approaches taken also vary, such as the socio-economic approach which considers poor people as unable to help themselves, the socio-reformist approach such as actions to overcome natural disasters and famine, the socio-economic approach which considers poor people as having the potential to overcome their own problems, or the socio-transformist who believes that development must touch on more basic things such as changes in attitudes and behavior, views and culture of society. The socio-economic and socio-transformational approaches are the main choices for YSDK although the possibility remains open for other approaches according to the situation and conditions of the target beneficiaries. Support for more equitable and participatory development policies is believed to accelerate the process of change.

Objective

The aim of the presence of NGOs in general and YSDK in particular is to make a real contribution and contribute creative and innovative thinking as well as real actions in favor of communities or marginalized groups in alleviating poverty, fighting injustice, raising awareness for mitigation and adaptation to climate change and various problems faced by the Indonesian people in general and the people of West Kalimantan in particular.
